Hey guys. Today’s flower is the Lily flower. It is thought that the genus name comes from the Greek word “leiron” which is thought to refer to the white Madonna lily, Legend has it that the flower was created from the breast milk of Hera, wife of Zeus. The flower was considered so beautiful that Venus (the goddess of love) grew so jealous of the white flower that she cursed it to grow with a yellow pistil. This flower has appeared in works throughout history, the first of which was found in Crete in 1580 BC. and it came to represent a symbol of fertility for Pagans and Christians alike. In Greece, it still represents purity and abundance. Brides will wear crows of lily flowers and wheat, though. This might be true for some cultures, others see it as a symbol of death and purity in passing. Specifically, the flower was sprinkled over children’s graves as well as those of saints and martyrs. This flower is native to Japan.
During the Victorian Era, there was a huge push to find plants to use for medicinal purposes and explorer Augustine Henry became so enamored with lilies that he scoured the globe to find new types of the flower. He was originally looking for medicinal plants but because of his love of lilies, he actually helped the development of the orange Lilium henryii (or the Henry lily). Another explorer named EH Wilson scoured China for lilies and eventually discovered the white Lilium Regale (the white Regal lily) In modern times, the lily is commonly associated with Easter as it is associated with the resurrection of Jesus Christ and the Virgin Mary.
So in the spirit of purity and abundance, what do my cards have to say for me today? Let’s pull some and find out, shall we?
