The flower we are going to be looking at today is the freesia Originating in South Africa, this flower belongs in the Iris family and has approximately 14 species associated with it. The name comes from the botanist Christian P. Ecklon, who named the flower after his friend and fellow botanist Freidrich HT Freese. This flower is popular due to its fragrance however, they are difficult to grow in domestic gardens because of their delicate petals. In this way, the freesia is similar to the gladioli. The general meaning of the flower suggests innocence, friendship, trust, and thoughtfulness, and in the Victorian period, giving this flower was seen as the ultimate expression of trust. In the United States, this flower is commonly given to couples to commemorate a couple’s seventh wedding anniversary and also has numerological associations to the number 9 (the meaning being selflessness and obligation.) the flower is also used in weddings because it represents the purity of the bride as well as trust between the couple. While not outright poisonous, the sap from the freesia plant can irritate the skin if you’re prone to sensitivities so please be careful. On an interesting note, the plant is zygomorphic, which means that the flowers only grow on one side of the stalk. The freesia is used as a fragrance flower in beauty products and aromatherapy as a stress reliever.
So with this in mind, how can I honor the trust, innocence, and friendships in my life and how do I take my hardships and difficulties and use them to bloom where I am planted? What other things can I do to honor this time of joy and renewal?

What I’m seeing in this reading is that there are a lot of choices that need to be made and perhaps it’s best to understand that sometimes things don’t work out, no matter how badly we want them to. A change in perspective or environment is the only remedy to ease the potential anxieties I may be feeling around my situation. The way I can honor my friends and family is to know that they’re my rock and support system. I am an independent person but I am not an island unto myself and the support I get from my loved ones helps me through even the hardest times.
